Fall 2009 Art Classes!

Pacific Art League 668 Ramona St. Palo Alto, CA 94301 (650) 321-3891 www.PacificArt League.org  Adults Classes: Beginning Collage Wednesdays 9 to noon Collage & Mixed Media Wednesday 1 - 3:30                                                  Adult Workshops: Gelatin Prints 10/9 9am to 3pm Mosaics 11/06 9am to 3pm  Children’s Classes: Art for Tots & Parents Thursdays 9 to 11  ADULT CLASSES Beginning Collage  # CM102 9/24- 12/3 Wednesdays 9 to noon A perfect class for creative people who love art papers, fibers, fabrics,  photographs and yearn to create beautiful art now, not after years of art  classes.  A little art history, empowering instruction, lots of laughter and a  supportive environment make this the perfect class for the beginner or  experienced artist wanting to work in this exciting media.  I provide handouts of  every technique demonstrated. $8 Material Fee each session.  Student Materials: Scissors Exacto knives Pencil Notepaper  Glue Stick (UHU brand is best) 1/2-inch brush (any type you like, cheap is OK) Water container Self-healing mat (if you have one) Favorite magazines to cut up . Week 1 Starting at the beginning.  We’ll look Braque, Gris, Schwitters and  Picasso’s work and do our own study on art paper using magazines, textured paper,  sewing pattern paper and rice paper.  Students will use a variety of glues to  gain familiarity and to learn which works best with each paper.  We will  also learn a transfer technique.   They will make art nametags in the first  session.  Week 2 Fauvism and color.  We will look at the work of Andre Derain, Raoul Dufy  and Matisse then play with color to help us look at the world through  refreshed eyes.  A variety of coloring materials will be introduced such as  watercolor, watercolor oil sticks, pencils and crayons, colored pencils and  Sennelier oil sticks. Students will develop a color plan for the photograph or  picture of their choice and will be encouraged to experiment with acrylics as  well as different sources of color such as coated wire, balloons, fabric,  gelatin capsules filled with chalk dust, rubber bands, dried plant material,  small pieces of paper, etc.  Week 3  Complete Fauve piece  Week 4 & 5 The Human Face.  Grosz and Hausman will be our starting point.  Students  will learn substrate preparation on canvas board using acrylic paint and  Vaseline. A brief overview of the properties of acrylics will be presented.   Students will create their own “Dehumanized Man” or “Robot” or a face of their  choice incorporating social commentary if desired.    Week 6  Tea Cups Oppenheim’s Breakfast in Fur or Eyeglasses by Jasper Johns and  other artists, whose works were created primarily in the late 1990, will  inspire students to work “outside the envelope” using common materials.   Week 7 & 8  Shadow Boxes.  After a brief exploration of the boxes of Delhaes, Sas Colb,  Cornell, Carleen Jimenez and San Francisco artist Tom Marioni students will  learn another substrate preparation and how to create faux metal patinas on  cigar boxes. We will look at Raymond Saunders use of chalkboard paint and  students will experiment with application.  They will learn how to install  shelves in the boxes.  Students will then complete their own boxes using  themes of nature shrine, mystery objects or one of their own choosing.   Week 9 Putting it all together.  Rauschenberg will be our starting point for a  culmination of the techniques we have studied to date.  Using metaphor themes  for journey, journal or rebirth,  each student will create a piece on canvas.   A substrate preparation will be demonstrated as well as how to finish the  canvas by creating a frame.   Week 10 Student show & pot puck lunch   Collage and Mixed Media #CM1000a 9/23 to 11/25  Wednesdays 1 to 3:30 Two 6-week sessions  This ongoing class welcomes intermediate and advanced artists seeking group  critique, substrate preparation techniques, transfer and patina  demonstrations and the inspiration that comes from working with a group of like-minded  creative and spirited artists.  A structured syllabus is available for  artists desiring a challenging curriculum.   ADULT WORKSHOPS  Gelatin Prints #WPR141 Friday, October 9 am – 3pm  You do not need special equipment to create dreamy images to use alone, in  collages, book arts and mixed media.  You will get complete written  instructions and leave with lots of prints ready to use in a variety of ways.  $13  material fee covers all special materials.  Material List:  Scissors Exacto knife & blades Pencil Self-healing mat Wax paper Any special paper you want to use for printing  Mosaics #WCR140 Friday November 6 9am – 3pm The art of mosaics is easy to learn, creates beautiful items and can be  used on a variety of surfaces.  You will receive written instructions, sample  patterns, special materials and a paver to embellish.  Don’t through out any  more of your broken china!  Bring it to mosaic class and give it a whole new  life. A repetition collage, a  project with light and shadow as essential elements and an antique 78 record  will be part of our work together.  Material Fee $20  Week 1 Welcome to the studio and it’s resources, introductions and syllabus  overview.  Working on beautiful watercolor paper, artists will begin creating a  series of intuitive miniature (4X6) collages.  We will discuss how to connect  these pieces taking inspiration from repetitive images in the style of  Joseph Cornell.  Week 2 & 3  We will push the envelope and work on a 24" x 30" canvas panel. Don’t be  afraid!  You will love your finished piece. We will explore substrate  preparation possibilities and you will start your exploration of options.  You can’t  make a mistake, so jump in.  Your mini collages will be incorporated into  your large piece.  Week 4  Our White and Light project is inspired by one of Maya Lin’s amazing  pieces.  The shadows are an integral part of this piece. Working with gessoed foam  core, light and headpins, artists will create an interplay between the  tangible and the intangible, the between the light and the medium.  Week 5 Time…too much, too little; present or past or future; time capsule;  memories or dreams, time heals all wounds. Time means many things.  Using time as a  subject, artist will create a collage or assemblage to reflect the meaning  of time.  Week 6 & 7 Keep it on the record!  The teacher will provide students with an antique  78 record.  Artist may create a 2D collage, a 3D piece or an art book.  Week 8 Finish all projects    Week 9  Field trip to San Francisco or Berkeley  Week 10 Opening Gala  NOTE:  Students are encouraged to work on a different theme or project with  the support of the teacher if they wish. Children will learn a variety of clay  techniques. They will love glazing their work.  Important skills are gained because  there are several steps involved in completing a piece.  The projects are  fanciful and fun and there will be time for free sculpture!   CLAYMATION Young artists will create their own stories, which will come to life with  clay creatures and sets they make.  Using computers and claymation techniques  artists will make a disc to take home to have your very own academy award  ceremony.
